Why Energy Leadership Matters
Every client I work with undergoes an Energy Leadership Index (ELI) Assessment at the beginning and end of our coaching relationship. The ELI not only evaluates the current state of a client’s energy but also establishes a shared language for discussing mindset under various stressors, such as leadership challenges, performance pressure, and workload management.
At the end of the coaching relationship, the ELI serves as a “milestone” to measure personal growth and energy shifts. As an Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner, I have dedicated hundreds of hours to mastering this tool, ensuring it delivers transformative insights for my clients. Grounded in Bruce D. Schneider’s Energy Leadership™ framework, the ELI is a cornerstone of my coaching process.
What is Energy Leadership?
In Energy Leadership™, "energy" refers to how we perceive and interact with the world. It drives our thoughts, emotions, and actions, profoundly influencing performance, relationships, and overall satisfaction in life and work. Depending on its source, energy can either empower or limit your potential.
Peter Drucker famously said, “What is measured can be improved.” This principle underscores the importance of the ELI—it allows us to assess where you are now so you can track your growth over time. In short, you need to know your starting point to master your energy.
Key Insights from an ELI Debrief
The ELI debrief is a comprehensive process. Here are the foundational concepts:
Seven Energy Levels: Energy ranges from Level 1 (low) to Level 7 (high).
Energetic States: The Energetic Profile reflects your everyday energy, while the Energetic Stress Reaction shows your energy under stress.
Catabolic vs. Anabolic Energy: Lower levels (1 & 2) are catabolic, causing stress and limiting decision-making. Higher levels are anabolic, enabling strategic thinking, clarity, and peak performance.
Average Resonating Level (ARL): This metric averages all energy levels across both states, providing a holistic view of your energy.
Energy Shifts: Unlike personality traits, energy is an attitude that can be intentionally cultivated and mastered over time.

Real-World Results: A Client's Journey
Recently, I conducted a second milestone ELI debrief with a client. Here's a snapshot of their progress:
ARL Increase: The client's ARL rose from 3.28 to 3.88—an impressive 18.3% improvement.
Reduction in Catabolic Energy: The client experienced decreased stress and became more responsive rather than reactive, both in daily life and high-pressure situations.
When I shared these results, the client exclaimed, “It’s a huge shift; it’s really stunning.” They described a recent interaction with an employee where they transitioned from frustration (Level 2 energy) to thoughtful, anabolic problem-solving. This growth enabled them to lead with clarity and confidence.
Tangible Business Outcomes
Skeptical about the impact of mastering energy? Consider this:
Revenue Growth: The client’s firm saw a 60% revenue increase from 2023 to 2024, with even greater growth on the horizon.
Improved Team Performance: By stepping back and empowering their team, client satisfaction soared, as evidenced by client surveys.
Enhanced Leadership: The client now leads authentically, focusing on strategy and long-term success instead of micromanagement.
The Path to Success
Mastering your energy is the gateway to success—however you define it. The process requires:
Measurement: Start with an ELI to understand your baseline.
Commitment: Focus on improving your energy levels through intentional effort.
Awareness: Cultivate a mindset of growth, both daily and in real-time situations.
